Week of February 10-14

Greetings parents!

We had a fun day filled with caring on Friday! We decorated cookies, passed out valentines and spent the rest of the day in our pods learning about and using the culture of caring.

Passing out Valentines!

Decorating cookies!
In reading this week we really focused on phoneme segmentation and rhyming words. We worked on breaking words apart, stretching them out and sounding them out. Soon we will be starting spelling words!

Reading at our just right levels!
In writing this week we continued to write true stories. We focused on small moments from our lives and practiced sequencing them in the correct order. We also focused on using correct punctuation and spaces between words.

Writers hard at work.
In math this week we continued to work on math partners and finding sums. We are beginning to focus more on subtraction now as well as building teen numbers with ten frames.

In social studies this week we continued to talk about needs and wants. We used the SMARTboard this week to do different activities as we learned to tell the difference between needs and wants. How fun!

Fun in the snow!

The kids singing in Spanish!

Greetings parents!

Did you know that Chinese New Year was on Friday, January 31st? Thank you to the Meeuwsen family for coming in and teaching us about this holiday!

Kate in her beautiful Chinese dress!

Chinese dragon dance!

This week in reading we read If You Give a Mouse a Cookie by Laura Numeroff. We had fun retelling this story and making text-to-text connections with the other Laura Numeroff books we have read. We really focused on phoneme segmentation this week and practiced breaking apart words.

Fun with phoneme segmentation!
In writing this week we talked about making our writing easier for others to read. We sorted our writing into two piles: a hard to read pile and an easy to read pile. Next, we discussed why our hard to read pile was hard to read. We then went on to fix our hard to reads writing pieces by adding details, spaces, more to our pictures, etc. It is so fun to see the kids making these connections!

Playing house in Spanish!

In math this week we had fun finding math partners and adding them together! We also continued to use ten frames to make teen numbers. We will soon be focusing more on subtraction as we learn the symbol for take away as well.

Using cubes to find math partners and write addition problems!

Math with Ms. Brook
In social studies this week we reviewed maps and began talking about needs, wants and the differences between the two. This week we will dive more into needs and wants and how they are different at home and at school.
