Week of January 20-24

Despite the cold, we had such a fun week!

This week we read If You Give a Moose a Muffin by Laura Numeroff. We had fun making text-to-text connections with past books we read by Laura Numeroff. This was a great story to read while practicing our retelling skills. This week we focused on beginning sounds and breaking words apart to hear beginning, middle and ending sounds. We began learning the -ap word family this week. Way to go readers!

These writers hit it out of the park this week! We practiced writing in our just-right spots and were able to get lots accomplished. We continued to write our true stories while touching each page and saying our story aloud first. This helps get our ideas out before putting them down on paper.

In math this week we continued to work on addition and making teen numbers using ten frames. We each made a teen number in our teen numbers books. We practiced sticking ten stickers on one side and the ones on the other side. Great work mathematicians!

In social studies this week we continued to learn about maps. We finished completing a classroom map with a partner and then presented them to the group. Afterward we created individual maps. Students did a great job including all parts of the classroom with symbols and a map key.

Notes/Reminders:

-Lollipop Concert is this Tuesday, January 28. Please send a car seat with your child on this day. We will be leaving Innocademy at 10:20 and returning at 11:55.

-Growth portfolios will be going home this Friday

-Report cards will be coming out the end of this week

Have a great week!

Week of January 13-17

We were so hungry this week we ate through lots of apples, grapes, strawberries, cheese, crackers, bananas, pretzels, watermelon, lollipops, cookies and more! (Only one cookie and one lollipop ;)
The caterpillar ate through some of our food! (I had to tell the kids it was just pretend because they didn't want to eat the food at first) ;)

We had so much fun making our hungry caterpillar pattern necklaces!
In reading this week we continued to read The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle. We practiced retelling the story and sequencing the events in the correct order. Students were given their very own hungry caterpillar books to take home and practice, focusing on the sight word see.

What a yummy feast!
In writing this week we practiced telling true small moment stories. We learned that true stories are something that really happened to us. They tell who is in the story, where the story takes place, and what the characters are doing. These writers did a great job with this!

In math this week we continued working on addition problems and creating new shapes out of shapes we already know. Next week we will begin working more with subtraction. Great job mathematicians!

Beautiful math artwork!
In social studies this week we learned how to read and draw maps! We created a map of our classroom in partners and did a great job working with each other to create a win-win map!

Week of January 6-10

Hello Parents!

We had so much fun this week even though it was cut short with our snow days!

This week in reading we read the book The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle. We will continue this book into next week due to the short week. We reviewed our letters and sight words this week to get back into our routine. This coming week we will begin working on the -ap word family along with focusing on beginning sounds.

We did some fun writing activities this week with the book The Very Hungry Caterpillar. We wrote about our snacks since the caterpillar eats lots of snacks in the book. We also pretended we were caterpillars and wrote about what we would do as caterpillars! We practiced stretching our words out and using the word wall, ABC banner and Zoo friends to help us!

Working together!

Leading our friends in some songs!
In math this week we practiced working on teen numbers with ten frames and addition problems. We are working on understanding what a group of ten looks like and that when you add ones you come up with a teen number. We are mainly practicing addition to learn the + symbol and establish a good understanding of addition.

Hungry Caterpillar math!
In social studies this week we learned about maps and what symbols on a map mean. We created a map together and added symbols to it from the key. This week we will create maps in groups along with a map key.
