Week of August 19-22

Hello from the Youngest Friend's room!

We had so much fun this week! Synergy Day was a blast. We had our performance in the morning of Mrs. Wishy Washy followed by a day of salsa-making. It was a day of laughter, smiles and fun for sure!

In Reading this week we read the book Mrs. Wishy Washy. This is a "read-together book." That means that we read it together as a group every day. By the end of the week the kiddos could retell the entire story. To practice retelling, did a reader's theater of the story. The kiddos were so excited to be in a real "play."
We continued to review letters a,m, and t and incorporated these into our centers. Ask your child to show you the motion for Allie Alligator, Missy Mouse and Timothy Tiger.

In Writing this week we practiced writing about something we know a lot about. We talked about how sometimes all writers get "stuck." When this happens, we say "I can solve it myself!" We learned that even though we get stuck, we sit back, think about it and add more to our writing. Great job writers!
Writers hard at work.
In Math this week we practiced numbers 1-6, drawing scenes of 3, drawing circles and adding and subtracting circles. We are having so much fun! To practice counting, we do a "number parade," where we hold up numbers 1-6 and have to get into the correct order. Also, each day we add another number to our counting book which is numbers 1-10.
Number parade!
In Social Studies this week we talked about rules at home and rules at school. We talked about how we all have different rules at home but the same rules at school. We talked about the importance of sharing, treating our friends nice and staying safe.
iPad time with friends!
In Spanish this week we learned a few new songs! We have a song for the days of the week, months of the year and parts of the body. We jump up on whatever day it is and the month of Agosto. We read the story "Chicka Chicka Bum Bum" and learned how to ask each other our names in Spanish. Your child is also beginning to learn colors and numbers.
Synergy day was so much fun!

Week of August 12-15

Hello parents!

We had a fantastic week in the Youngest Friend's room! Thank you for sharing your children with me-they inspire me every day!

Making letters out of play-doh.
In reading this week we wrapped up or work with The Kissing Hand. It was so much fun listening to the kiddos retelling this story with confidence. Retelling is a very important skill in reading. It sharpens comprehension skills as the child begins to learn from what they are reading. Practice talking about what happened in the story after reading at night.
We also studied letters a,m and t this week. We are using the zoo phonics animals to help us learn letters and sounds. Ask your child to show you the motions that go with these! As we learn letters and sounds, we are practicing breaking apart words and stretching them out as we learn to read.

In writing this week we learned that writers can always add more to their writing, even when they think they are done. Lucy Calkins likes to use this quote when teaching this concept: "When you think you are done, you have just begun!" As we write this year, we will work on writing with stamina. We are learning that writers continue to add things and revise many times.
Writers hard at work!
In math this week we had a number parade! Students held number cards 1-10 out of order and had to get themselves in the correct order. They did a great job! We practiced drawing circles and then had our friends count the circles. We read Anno's Counting Book again and practiced drawing scenes of 2 and 3.
Recess fun!
In Social Studies this week we continued "All About Me" and talked about how we are unique and different. Students wrote about what they want to be when they grow up, their families and other favorite activities. This was helpful to me as well as I learned about the kiddos!
All About Me posters!
In Spanish this week we practiced days of the week, counting and saying our names. Students learned how to ask someone what their name is and how to respond. So fun seeing them get excited about a new language!

Week of August 5-8

Greetings from the Youngest Friend's room!

We had a wonderful first week together! I am so excited for what this year has in store.
Working together!
In reading this week we began with the story The Kissing Hand. This is the story of Chester raccoon and he is afraid to go to school. His mother kisses his hand and reminds him that her love is always with him even when he is at school. The kids loved this story! We talked about how we felt at school for the first time and even made a graph together to show our feelings on the first day.

Some of our friends making their very own kissing hand poems.
In writing this week we wrote about something we did this summer. It was so fun to hear about their stories and see their writing! This year we will be writing every day. We will be following the Lucy Calkins curriculum. I am so excited to see these writers grow!
Writers hard at work.
In math this week we began doing calendar with the smartboard and making numbers with connecting cubes with Ms. Brook. Ms. Brook will be teaching math this year as I am teaching Spanish. We read Anno's Counting Book and used the smartboard to practice counting. We also completed our beginning of the year assessment with the helps of Ms. Kelli's class.

Ms. Kelli's friends helping us in math.

In Spanish this week we began using the smartboard to do calendar. We talked about the days of the week, the weather and practiced counting. On Thursday we watched a video about Goldilocks and the Three Bears and had a fun discussion throughout the video and afterward. So fun to see the kiddos speaking Spanish!

Some other parts of our day..

We really enjoyed pod this week! Ask your child to tell you what pod they are in and what they learned about with their friends in other parts of the school!
Pod was so much fun this week! We love being with our older friends!
