Week of August 12-15

Hello parents!

We had a fantastic week in the Youngest Friend's room! Thank you for sharing your children with me-they inspire me every day!

Making letters out of play-doh.
In reading this week we wrapped up or work with The Kissing Hand. It was so much fun listening to the kiddos retelling this story with confidence. Retelling is a very important skill in reading. It sharpens comprehension skills as the child begins to learn from what they are reading. Practice talking about what happened in the story after reading at night.
We also studied letters a,m and t this week. We are using the zoo phonics animals to help us learn letters and sounds. Ask your child to show you the motions that go with these! As we learn letters and sounds, we are practicing breaking apart words and stretching them out as we learn to read.

In writing this week we learned that writers can always add more to their writing, even when they think they are done. Lucy Calkins likes to use this quote when teaching this concept: "When you think you are done, you have just begun!" As we write this year, we will work on writing with stamina. We are learning that writers continue to add things and revise many times.
Writers hard at work!
In math this week we had a number parade! Students held number cards 1-10 out of order and had to get themselves in the correct order. They did a great job! We practiced drawing circles and then had our friends count the circles. We read Anno's Counting Book again and practiced drawing scenes of 2 and 3.
Recess fun!
In Social Studies this week we continued "All About Me" and talked about how we are unique and different. Students wrote about what they want to be when they grow up, their families and other favorite activities. This was helpful to me as well as I learned about the kiddos!
All About Me posters!
In Spanish this week we practiced days of the week, counting and saying our names. Students learned how to ask someone what their name is and how to respond. So fun seeing them get excited about a new language!
